Hardcover. Condition: Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Good, Some Tape Marks. First Edition. The arrival of the 1820 Settlers in South Africa is an event the importance of which can hardly be over-estimated. They brought to their new country not only their courage and determination, their inspiration and endeavour, but also their way of life and a past rich in tradition. It is as a fitting tribute to all they have contributed to South African nationhood that this book traces back the family histories of some of their number, bringing to life again the glory of the past. The Settlers brought little enough with them when they left England, and they came to a wild and primitive region, beset by wars and turbulence. In the course of the Frontier Wars their farms were many times overrun. Homes were burnt, treasured family heirlooms were lost, records were destroyed. It was therefore only by dint of patient and painstaking research that the histories and, in most cases, the coats of arms of one hundred Settler families could be established, culled from the records that still remain and from the fading memories of the descendants of these intrepid pioneers. Thus was an im portant part of our heritage preserved. This book appears in a limited edition of 1,000 numbered copies, and will be of great value to collectors of Africana. IVAN MITFORD-BARBERTON Ivan Mitford-Barberton is better known as sculptor, some of his well-known works being the Woltemade in Pinelands, the Leopard on the Rock at Hout Bay and the 1820 Settler Group in Grahamstown. But this descendant of the 1820 Settlers is also a herald on the Council of the Bureau of Heraldry and a well-known author on British Settler history. It is therefore difficult to think of anyone better fitted and qualified to produce a book on the histories and coats of arms of the various frontier families. VIOLET WHITE Few people are better acquainted with the involved interrelationships of the Settler families of the Albany district than Violet White, now Mrs Jock Willetts. She is herself a great grand daughter of Major T.C. White, who was killed on the banks of the Bashee River in the war of 1835. Her dedication and remarkable powers of memory have helped to establish her as a leading authority on the 1820 Settlers. Families included: Ainslie, Atherstone, Ayliff, Bailie, Bain, The Barbers of Peak incorporating Hilton-Barber and Mitford-Barberton, Barker, Biddulph, Biggar, Bisset, Bold of Bold, Bovey, Bowker, Campbell, Carlistle, Cawood, Chase, Cock, Collett, Croft, Cumming, Currie, Damant, Daniell, Dell, Dold, Driver, Dugmore, Duthie of Belvedere, Ebden, Emslie, Estment, Freemantle, Filmer, Fincham, Frost, Futter, Gilfillan, Godlonton, Goldswain, Gower, Graham of Fintry, Greathead, Gush, Halse, Hancock, Hart, Hayward, Hobson, Hockly, Hoole of Chester, Hudson, Kestell, King, Lanham, Lloyd, Lovemore, Maynard, Mildenhall, Moodie, Niland, Norden, Norton, Nourse, Oates, Ogilvie, Painter, Patrick Philipps, Pigot, Pike, Pote, Poultney, Pringle, Rennie, Roberts, Rudmann, Selwyn, Shaw, Shepstone, Shone, Slater, Southey, Stanton, Staples, Stillwell, Stirk, Stow, Stretch, Sutton, Temlett, Trollip, Tudhope, Webb, White, Whittal, Wilmot, Wood, Wood, Wright, Cronwright, Wright. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------------- 303 pages - good tight copy - 641 of 1000 limited edition - diagrams of arms where applicable ------------------ Orders over $100.00 are shipped using tracked courier delivery services.
