In 1900, rond zijn negentiende verjaardag, trok Pablo Picasso naar Parijs om er de Wereldtentoonstelling te bezoeken en kennis te maken met deze artistieke hoofdstad van Europa. Het werd al snel duidelijk dat hij ook een eigen plaats in het kunstenaarsmilieu wilde veroveren. Ondanks zijn provinciale Spaanse vooropleiding mocht Picasso al een jaar na aankomst in Parijs een grote tentoonstelling houden in de prestigieuze Galerie Vollard. Tegelijkertijd dompelde hij zich vol verve onder in het bruisende leven van de bohemienwijk Montmartre. Korte tijd later wedijverde hij met Matisse om een koppositie in de Franse avant-garde en koos hij als kunstenaar een revolutionaire koers op weg naar een toekomst als wereldberoemd kunstenaar.
