In 1900, rond zijn negentiende verjaardag, trok Pablo Picasso naar Parijs om er de Wereldtentoonstelling te bezoeken en kennis te maken met deze artistieke hoofdstad van Europa. Het werd al snel duidelijk dat hij ook een eigen plaats in het kunstenaarsmilieu wilde veroveren. Ondanks zijn provinciale Spaanse vooropleiding mocht Picasso al een jaar na aankomst in Parijs een grote tentoonstelling houden in de prestigieuze Galerie Vollard. Tegelijkertijd dompelde hij zich vol verve onder in het bruisende leven van de bohemienwijk Montmartre. Korte tijd later wedijverde hij met Matisse om een koppositie in de Franse avant-garde en koos hij als kunstenaar een revolutionaire koers op weg naar een toekomst als wereldberoemd kunstenaar. Dit boek schetst Picasso's ontdekking van het artistieke leven in de Franse hoofdstad en onderzoekt zijn antwoord op het werk van kunstenaars als Van Gogh, Toulouse-Lautrec, Steinlen, Puvis de Chavannes, Rodin en Cezanne. Hij ontwikkelde in deze vroege Parijse jaren een uiterst persoonlijke stijl die zijn kracht ontleende aan het schilderproces zelf waarbij de traditionele verschillen tussen imitatie en realiteit vervaagden. Het bracht Georges Braque in 1907, tijdens een bezoek aan Picasso's atelier om zijn laatste werk te zien, tot de uitroep dat het leek of Picasso iedereen dwong om 'kerosine te drinken' en daarbij zelf als een vuurspuwer te werk ging.
