Included are the reports of several officers with first-hand knowledge of these problems, the report of General Custer, and the defense of the allegations made by Custer and others by Brig.-Gen. Nathaniel B. Baker, Adjutant General of Iowa. An uncommon early Custer collectible.

First page is the title page (creased with corner loss). The remainder of the first (numbered) 24 pages are 12 pages of a general report including numbers of men, artillery, etc. + 10 pages of Mi…litary Department Rosters of Officers. This general report notes: "A state like ours, exposed along its Southern border for several hundred miles to invasions, by rebellious citizens of a neighboring state, and along a portion of its North-Western border by hostile Indians, should be thoroughly armed and ready to meet any emergency which should arise." The Roster of Officers begins with "Commander-in-Chief and Staff": [Governor] Samuel J. Kirkwood, Commander-in-Chief; Baker, Adjutant General; Culbertson, resigned Asst. Adjutant General; Price, Pay Master General; and (penned-in) J.C. Hughes, M.D., Surgeon General. Grenville M. Dodge, Colonel, 4th Regiment Iowa Volunteer Infantry is of note amongst the officers. The 494 remaining pages (Appendices A through H) are roster lists of all companies of men and some brief formal reports/letters. Age, Residence, Nativity and Rank are noted for all men. Rejected Men and Additional Enlistments are noted below each company's roster. Listed are: the 1st through 14th Regiments of Volunteer Infantry, 1st through 4th Regiments of Cavalry (included in the 3rd - Fletcher's Battery Light Artillery), Sioux City Cavalry; 1st and 3rd Infantry lists of wounded, killed and missing; Surgeon General Hughes' Report (of killed and wounded, etc.); Report of Lindley and Parker to the Adjutant General (condition of the troops, details of their engagements + recommendations and suggestions); Morledge's Report; Guiberson's Report; General Orders, No. 106, from L. Thomas, Adjutant General, Headquarters of the Army, Washington (a few missing words lost in a tear can yet be made out). Laid-in is what appears to be a Civil War era leaflet (5 1/4 x 7 3/4 inches) in quite nice condition except for chipping along one edge. It is headed: "To The Public," contains a poem "The Blind Man's Appeal" and states "Price: What you wish to give." The leaflet explains: "The vendor of this sheet lost his sight by accident while blasting, etc, etc, etc - John Clark" RWR5 Civil War Rosters Military Iowa 19th Century.
