Add to basketCondition: Very Good +. First Edition. A sumptuous celebration of Art Deco interior decoration, in an overview of the interiors designed by the greatest and most influential of French Art Deco interior decorators and furniture designers, Émile-Jacques Ruhlmann. As Ruhlmann was still very much active at the time this survey was i…ssued, the portfolio covers his work from 1913 to 1924, ending in fact before the term which so epitomizes his work, "Art Deco", was coined, which was first heard in 1925 in conjunction with a Paris Exhibition in 1925. In this collection of plates it is immediately apparent that the streamlining of ornament that came with Art Deco could still project fineness, luxuryand sophistication. Indeed, Art Deco didn't impose a renunciation of ornament, such as was the creed of Brutalism, but rather a reworking of the vocabulary of decorative effects, and a simplification if you will, of its grammar. 4to in size, measuring 28 by 23.5 cm. 16 pp., followed by 40 plates, 15 of which are pochoir colored; otherwise, printed collotypes. All leaves are thick paper, with the plate leaves of a card stock thickness. Generally plates illustrate opulent rooms, some grand, some more intimate yet just as stylish and charismatic. All kinds of rooms are here depicted, including salons (living rooms or parlors), dining rooms, bedrooms, hallways, libraries, bathrooms andThe text pages are comprised of two gatherings, both here uncut. The pagination does include the title page and everything after. The plates are loose, as issued. Short captions give the year of the work being shown. Color plates show one room each. Non-colored plates are sometimes similar, showing a particular interior, but sometimes there are two or more illustrations on the plate, and sometimes they instead show a floor plan with furniture placement, or are a somewhat pared down depiction of various elevations of a room. As there was more than one artist responsible for the illustrations, they don't have one cohesive style. The finest of the pochoir illustrations have a kinship to the paintings of Edouard Vuillard. Condition: Light film of soiling on the portfolio. Minor fraying to cloth at joint edge. Light age toning to the leaves within around their perimeter; otherwise, occasional light foxing, but overall, the contents are clean, and the color of the pochoir is fresh, at times, bright, at other times, more a chiarascuro, subtile and sublime. Portfolio. Cloth spine. Paper pastedown on boards. Ribbon tie.

Add to basketHardcover. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. Editions Albert Morance 1925 11" x 9 3/8" Lacking plates: 8/26/30/ & 36 Jean Badovici (6 January 1893 17 August 1956) was a French architect and architecture critic of Romanian origin, active in Paris. Jean Badovici gained reputation not for constructing buildings but for analyzing and… supporting avantgarde architecture. He was an influential critic and mentor of international modern architecture in France since he began editing the magazine L'architecture Vivante in 1923. He convinced the publisher Albert Morancé of the importance for such an avantgarde magazine which ran from 1923 till 1933. L Architecture Vivante became immediately an influential mouthpiece of the International style (Bauhaus, Constructivism, De Stijl). Le Corbusier - a friend of Badovici - for instance became one of the architects whose ideals were frequently discussed in this magazine. Badovici cultivated relations to European avantgarde magazines like Wendingen (Netherlands) and Cahiers d Art (France, founded in 1926) of his friend Christian Zervos. Regularly each issue of L Architecture Vivante presented a number of architects and their works but there were also some very few dealing with just one artist (Le Corbusier, Pierre Jeanneret and in 1929 Eileen Gray and her home E-1027). In his Intérieurs Français (French Interiors), Jean Badovici reproduced 40 interiors by some of the leading designers of his day. Although the hand-colored impressions may seem a little strange at first sight, his illustrations form important records about modern interior design in 1920s France. They show us the authentic combinations of furniture, textures and colors as they were brought together by the designers and home owners, in a way that would be difficult, if not impossible to reconfigure from our own modern perspective. This interior of an upstairs landing is a good example. It is dominated by the wallpaper of Atelier Martine of ca. 1912. Founded by Paul Poiret (French, Paris 1879-1944 Paris) in 1911, Atelier Martine produced many similarly heavily patterned wallpapers and fabrics, which were very popular during the Art Deco period. The combination with the yellow staircase and the turquoise upholstery give the interior an intensity which seems worlds apart from the contemporary, basic interiors created not so far away by the architect Le Corbusier (French (born Switzerland), La Chaux-de-Fonds 1887 1965 Roquebrune-Cap-Martin).
