Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book is a fascinating exploration of the hidden history embedded within the place-names of Gloucestershire, England. It delves into the rich tapestry of linguistic clues left behind by successive waves of settlers, from the ancient Britons to the Anglo-Saxons and the Vikings. The author unravels the secrets of these names, revealing stories of battles, settlements, and daily life that are otherwise lost to time. The book's meticulous examination of place-names sheds light on the evolution of the English language, the impact of dialectal influences, and the legacy of these ancient cultures on the landscape of England. Through the careful analysis of early forms and variations of place-names, the author offers a compelling and engaging journey through Gloucestershire's past, highlighting how even seemingly simple place-names hold deep historical significance. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.
