La période qui va de la nuit du 24 décembre à la nuit du 6 janvier est appelée par les ethnologues " le cycle des 12 jours " ou, parfois, peut-être plus correctement, des " douze nuits ". C'est le temps des grandes f…êtes d'hiver, c'est le temps sacré qui interrompt le temps profane, un moment important, fortement ritualisé. Christianisé dans sa forme, le cycle se greffe sur des anciennes fêtes indo-européennes et pré-indo-européennes dont nous ne savons pas grand-chose, sinon qu'elles exorcisaient le solstice. Sur ce fond ancien, de nouveaux apports se sont ajoutés, transformant progressivement les fêtes. En partant d'enquêtes orales, l'auteur a reconstruit la dynamique des manifestations festives et, par une recherche bibliographique approfondie, il l'a comparée aux fêtes analogues dans d'autres communautés. Il nous accompagne ainsi dans un long voyage à travers les traditions de Noël en Vallée d'Aoste, dans les communautés environnantes, Valais, Savoie et Canavais, avec une ouverture sur le monde alpin en général. C'est le prétexte aussi pour visiter et rendre honneur au monde paysan qui a forgé le paysage culturel de la montagne et qui, avec son sens pratique et ses licences fantastiques, a su conserver et transmettre un héritage spirituel riche et original.
