Contact seller5-star sellerSoft Cover. Condition: Fine. First Edition Thus. 2018 at copyright page for this compiled edition from Sacred Word Publishing. Glossy pictorial wraps, light shelf wear. Pages fine, no writing. Fine volume of this sometimes amazing and nearly always interesting story from the turn of the last century. First published as a serial…novella in Florida Magazine beginning in January 1902, it is compiled and transcribed here by C. J. Austin. From original Florida Mag. cover: "Published the First of Each Month at Jacksonville, Florida, USA." Within the story itself, the author claims similar openess to all for vessel and artifact evaluation while docked in Jacksonville. Turn-of-the century "Florida Magazine" serialized Morgan's novella that recounts a story - presented as fact - of J. Edward Barrington's 1890s marvelous south seas voyage and beyond. Barrington, it is described, discovers an ocean passage through the Antarctic ice wall which eventually lands him on the shores of The Iron Republic. This island continent beyond the wall exists in a modern and technologically advanced utopian-like world. Either as fact or fiction, it is a unique tale and presents an ideal of living and governance that will lead the reader to contemplate a life in this intriguingly divergent land! To begin, the claimed true story is copyrighted in 1902 and purportedly written by one Richard Jameson Morgan, yet is told in first person by an E. W. (or J. E.) Barrington. There are two small protrait photos with Barrington and Captain Brent in beginning of Chapter 2 of original published magazine seres. Richard Jameson Morgan (1850-1906) was a pioneering American newspaperman, Congregationalist minister, lecturer, and author based in Florida. He edited and published the Sub-Peninsula Sun and St. Petersburg Times (now Tampa Bay Times) newspapers. Rather intriguing novella purports to tell the tale of a scorned young lawyer fleeing to adventure. At the outset, the protagonist proclaims he is a Zetetic and plans to change the world with his discovery divulged in this sailing voyage. Florida Magazine in its prefatory remarks explains that Barrington is allowing any and all to board the ship while docked in Tampa Bay to view and evaluate the artifacts from the voyage beyond the ice wall barrier. The story begins with E. W. Barrington (with E. apparently being Edward as in story, or J. E. as below portrait photo). Barrington is a young self-claiming successful attorney from a small midwest city, who liquidates his entire possessions following his first attempt at running for congress. He is hoodwinked into running as a thirdy party candidate which splits the Republican vote and the corrupt Democrat wins. His life belongings are sold for gold, he embarks for New York, acquires "Wanderer," a sea worthy vessel, hires Captain Brent to navigate, and a crew, and embarks from New York Harbor for Antarctica. After several months of voyaging they arrive at their destination adjacent Argentina in December 1898; summer in the south or at the perimeter. They scale Mount Erebus and are regaled by an inspiring display of the Aurora Astralas. An opening or passage in the great ice barrier is discovered. According to author, it was not their intent to navigate through, but approached opening with towering ice walls on either side, and are sucked in with the current which rushes them many miles to the other side of barrier. Then, there are anomolous compass readings, yet there is still a sun and they sail on for months. Land is encountered which befuddles, but they anchor, and then meet with inhabitants. They have landed at Ironia or The Iron Republic. This nation is an ideal utopia formed in late 1700s when Europeans coming to America are somehow bound off course and end up in Antarctica and pass through same ice wall passage. With this discovered land they create a new world of perfect communal development which is rather advanced and intriguing for the late 18th century considering it is about a century following their beginning. A simple but advanced elementary existence for all with rather unique period and advanced transport, communication, etc. Barrington meets with the sole American, one Professor Morris, in this new nation who also made the same passage several decades prior during the American Civil War. He was from the American South, but then became established in the North, and did not wish to war against his brethren. This Professor Morris, whose wife, and daughter especially intrigue and infatuate Barrington are the core of the story. Extensive discussions and comparison of Ironia and America concerning philosophy, lifestyles and economies ensue throughout. Much criticism is laid upon America in comparison to the nature of this fluid and communal economy; mostly in opposition to the hustle, bustle, noise, squalor, and uneven distribution of wealth in America. Art, literature, philosophy, and technology are much appreciated and shared among all on this new continent; whereas greed, power, and materialism are over emphasized in the Old World (America and the West, and Earth, generally in this tale). Intriguing, but rather idealistic societal and semi-stale utopian perspectives are presented. It culminates with a great thrush, and the saddened return voyage. 168 pages. Insured post. Size: 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" Tall.
