Sus Recuerdos de Jane Austen fueron, pues, no sólo la primera biografía de la escritora, y durante mucho tiempo el texto en el que se basaron las demás, sino la primera defensa por extenso de sus obras, que en su tiempo muchos consideraron «insulsas y banales, faltas de colorido, y carentes por completo de aventuras e interés».
