Augustus Matthiessen received the Ph.D. in chemistry from the University of Giessen in 1853. From 1853 to 1857 Matthiessen worked with Bunsen and Kirchhoff at the University of Heidelberg. Matthiessen returned to London where in 1862 he held a lectureship in chemistry at St. Mary's Hospital Medical School and then became a lecturer at St. Bartholomew's Medical School. DSB, IX, p. 178.
