Thomas Mann had a sentimental connection to Brazil and good relations with some Brazilian intellectuals, which allowed for this publication. Also included is the unpublished short story "The Witness" by Graciliano Ramos, and unpublished contributions by Gilberto Freyre, Arthur Ramos, Augusto Frederico Schmidt, Affonso Arinos, Affonso Taunay, José Lins do Rego, etc. Scattered orange spots of oxidation. Good overall condition, without stamps, signatures, annotations, underlining, or loose pages. Rare. Brochura, 23x16cm, 112p. Número inaugural da terceira fase da Revista do Brasil, talvez a mais brilhante. Neste número, a conferência inedita Richard Wagner e a Eterna Allemanha, de Thomas Mann, pronunciada meses antes, no exílio, em comemoração do 125 aniversário do compositor, texto que só seria publicada em livro anos depois. Thomas Mann tinha uma ligação sentimental com o Brasil e boas relações com alguns intelectuais brasileiros, o que permitiu esta publicação. Mais o conto inédito A Testemunha de Graciliano Ramos, e contribuições inéditas de Gilberto Freyre, Arthur Ramos, Augusto Frederico Schmidt, Affonso Arinos, Affonso Taunay, José Lins do Rego, etc. Pontos alaranjados de oxidação esparsos. The wide-margined text is close to near fine with a slight ripple, light edgewear, and occasional modest foxing at the page edges, far from the text. The chemise is toned…and worn, with neatly strengthened tears at the spine, good only. Copy 153 of 200 numbered copies (of 205 total) Signed by Schmidt on the limitation page, and additionally Inscribed by him on the title page. Laid in an invitation to the book launch party with a Schaeffer lithograph on the cover, addressed to the book's recipient.
