SANDER, August (illustrator). Livre.…

"One of the legendary classics among German photography books, August Sander's FACE OF OUR TIME was first published in 1929, with a foreword by Alfred Doblin. 'The sixty shots of 20th-century Germans which the author includes represent only a small selection drawn from August Sander's major work, which he began in 1910. The author has not approached his immense self-imposed task from an academic standpoint, nor with scientific aids, and has received advice neither from racial theorists nor from social researchers. He has approached his task as a photographer from his own immediate observations of human nature and human appearances, of the human environment, and with an infallible instinct for what is genuine and essential. And he has brought the task to completion with the fanaticism of a seeker after truth, and without prejudice either for or against any one party, tendency, class, or society.'" Add to basketHardcover. Condition: Sehr gut. 1. Auflage. First edition, an unusually fresh copy, of August Sander's pioneering photographic work, conceived as a comprehensive visual study of the social fabric of the Weimar Republic. Rather than portraying prominent individuals or events, Sander turned his lens on ordinary people - farmers, craftsmen, professionals, artists, and labourers - creating a lucid, democratic portrait of German society through the physiognomies of its citizens. Each photograph is marked by an austere clarity and an absence of artifice, allowing individuality and presence to emerge with remarkable directness. Antlitz der Zeit reflects Sander's ambitious attempt to classify humanity into social types, organised according to occupation and class. The portraits are sequenced to suggest a broader sociological narrative, capturing not only the outward appearances but also the tensions, aspirations, and realities of late-1920s Germany. While Sander's method is ostensibly objective, the cumulative effect is quietly incisive: his work is neither neutral nor sentimental, and its acute social analysis proved unsettling to contemporaries. The volume occupies a foundational position in the history of modern photography, uniting documentary rigor with a restrained humanism that transcends conventional portraiture. As Parr and Badger have noted, many of Sander's most iconic images appear here, and the essential qualities of his vision are already fully formed. The work was sufficiently perceptive - and politically uncomfortable - that following the Nazi seizure of power in 1933, publisher's copies were confiscated, plates destroyed, and negatives seized by the Ministry of Culture. The enclosed publisher's announcement outlines Sander's original conception of the project as a vast sociological archive, structured into seven groups and intended for publication in approximately 45 folders. Antlitz der Zeit was envisaged as a selection volume drawn from this much larger undertaking, forming the foundation of what would later become Menschen des 20. Jahrhunderts. Today, the book is universally acknowledged as one of the great photobooks of the twentieth century and a cornerstone of documentary photography. Sander's commitment to honesty, clarity, and empathetic observation ensures the work's enduring relevance, offering a timeless meditation on identity, class, and the human condition. Parr & Badger I, p. 124; Auer 139; Göbel 694; Heidtmann 14133; Heiting/Jäger I, 302 ff. (with several reproductions); Heiting/Wiegand 122; The Open Book 84-85; Roth, The Book of 101 Books 52-53. Quarto (29.0 x 22.0 cm). Text in German. Original yellow cloth, cover design by Emil Preetorius. With the exceedingly rare publisher's prospectus. An exceptional copy, remarkably clean, the cloth near fine with only slight, even lightening to the spine and minimal edge toning; the interior pristine and firm. A notably sophisticated example of this seminal work.…
