A striking three dimensional world atlas designed as a teaching aid by the innovative German cartographer Friedrich August Ravenstein [1809 - 81]. Apart from the regional maps, it includes a twin spherical "Map illustration the chief divisions of Land and Water in both Hemispheres" which includes an imaginary map to illustrate "The Peculiarities of their Physical Geography.".

Dondorf, 1854. 235 x 282 mm. (maps); 245 x 295 mm. (box). Raised areas of maps a bit worn, box label a bit soiled and rubbed, but a very good set of this fragile atlas. Third edition, complete with the rare original box featuring a highly decorative polychrome label on the lid, with inner label serving as the set's "title-page" and key to the maps. Ravenstein, an innovative German cartographer, was the first to produce and publish commercially viable relief maps, issuing the first edition of his "Plastic" (i.e., relief) atlas in 1838. The atlas, intended as a teaching tool, was a considerable success, going through several editions up until the late 19th century; it was also issued in English and French versions. The set includes maps of Germany, Europe, Asia, Africa, North and South America, and Australia, together with an "Ideal-Bild" illustrating the maps' various cartographic features. Due to their fragility, examples of this atlas are scarce. .

An einen namentlich nicht genannten Freund: "Es ist ein Umstand eingetreten, der [.] mich veranlaßt, mit meinem Antrage auf Herausgabe einer topographischen Karte des Herzogthums früher hervor zu treten, als ich anfänglich beabsichtigte. Ich hoffe, daß dieß für die Entscheidung selbst nicht nachthe…ilig sein wird. Leider erlaubte der Gegenstand nicht, mich kürzer zu fassen; das Interesse, welches Sie unzweifelhaft für die Landeskunde nehmen, gibt mir den Muth, Sie zu bitten, der Kenntnisnahme anliegender Schriftstücke ein Stündchen zu widmen u. solche dann bei dem Ministerium einzureichen u. zu befürworten [.]". F. A. Ravenstein der Frankfurter Turnvater", Gründer der Frankfurter Turngemeinde und der Frankfurter Turnanstalt gab in seinem kartographischen Institut zahlreiche Neuigkeiten" heraus wie einen plastischen Schulatlas, welcher der Papierprägung Bahn brach (1839)", oder ein geprägtes Relief des Niederwaldes" und geprägte Reliefkarten von Württemberg und Hessen. Vorlegeblätter für kartographischen Unterricht (1836), und eine große Anzahl von Post- und Umgebungskarten gingen aus demselben hervor. In den 50er Jahren folgte auf das vortreffliche Relief der Grafschaft Schaumburg in 1:12 000 die Reihe von Plänen und Karten von Frankfurt a. M. und Umgebung, welche aus eigenen Aufnahmen Ravenstein's hervorgingen. Auch der Taunus- und Rheinpanoramen sei nicht vergessen. Der Rundblick von der Goethe-Ruhe ist wahrscheinlich das letzte eigene Werk des Kartographen, der 1865 seine kartographische Anstalt an Ludwig Ravenstein, seinen Sohn, übergeben hatte, nachdem er selbst noch in den letzten Jahren seiner bezüglichen Thätigkeit der Papen'schen Höhenschichtenkarte von Mitteleuropa und dem an deren Herstellung geknüpften Gedanken einer Bundes-Plankammer eifrige Theilnahme geschenkt hatte" (NDB XXVII, 471).
