First editions in English, with the ownership signature on the front pastedown of Douglas Haig, naming his cavalry regiment, the 7th Hussars, in which he served from 1885 to 1901. Haig studied the volume closely, annotating the text and inserting a leaf of manuscript notes. He later cited both authors in his 1907 book, Cavalry Studies. Cavalry in Modern War was first published in French in Revue des Deux Mondes in 1889. It asks whether improvements in firearms had rendered cavalry obsolete on the battlefield, and considers how reconnaissance, mobility, dismounted action, and mounted attack might preserve its effectiveness. The Cavalry Division as a Body in the Fight was first published in German in 1884. It is here extracted from the Journal of the Royal United Service Institution, Vol. 34, 1890 (pp. 45-99). It argues that the cavalry division remained a viable independent fighting formation, provided it was trained for rapid, flexible manoeuvre and committed decisively. Haig's inserted notes set out subjects for study, such as "consideration of the training of leaders in peacetime", "is there any normal fighting formation for the cavalry division", and "the cavalry division in pursuit". His annotations consist chiefly of pencilled sidelining and underlining, with occasional marginal comments and crosses. Haig played a significant role in debates over British cavalry doctrine before 1914, advocating shock action while also emphasizing mobility, reconnaissance, rifle fire, and dismounted action. In Cavalry Studies, Haig included an extensive extract from Cavalry in Modern War, describing it as "a commonsense view of the work of Cavalry" (pp. 15-17), and wrote that Hönig was "a German writer of undoubted authority" while quoting from another of his works (p. 102). 2 works in 1 vol., octavo (206 x 131 mm).
