This 2001 French?language art monograph presents the surviving fragments of a remarkable 1860 police seizure in which 5,000 erotic photographs were confiscated from photographer Auguste Belloc. Only twenty?four stereoscopic images remain today, preserved in the restricted "Enfer" collection of the Bibliothèque nationale de France. These rare photographs are notable for their unusually direct, undraped presentation of the body?images that broke sharply from the conventions of mid?19th?century studio modesty. The book contextualizes the seizure, the cultural climate of censorship, and Belloc's place in early photographic history, treating the surviving images as a significant moment in the evolution of erotic and artistic photography.
