Side-stapled limp card wrapps. illustrated by Arthur Moyse. Slight soiling to covers. A very good copy of this infamous small-press anthology published in 1965 by Screeches Publications of Blackburn, Lancashire, edited/compiled by the artist, poet and anarchist Arthur Moyse. The first edition was seized and the publisher, David Cunliffe, was prosecuted under both the Obscene Publications Act and the Post Office Act. It became something of a cause célèbre among the British avant-garde and alternative press, with support from figures including Michael Foot, Alan Sillitoe, George Melly and the poet/artist Dom Sylvester Houédard. It was re-issued after the trial.…

Coptic Press (1964-1968) was run by Albert Meltzer and Ted Kavanagh and published pamphlets on political issues relating to Anarchism and class struggle. This pamphlet looks at the link between Surrealism and revolutionary politics and is one of 5 publications by the Coptic Press in this format (I currently have 2 more from the series listed for sale). Since the press ran from 1964-68, I am assuming the pamphlet dates to that period. It contains a postscript by Arthur Moyse, who was a well known Anglo-Irish anarchist, artist and writer. Political anti-censorship poster designed and written by Moyse, Morris and Cunliffe, in support of publisher John Calder - following the attempt to prosecute Calder and Boyars for publishing Selby's 'Last Exit'. The text reads: ". John Calder is soon to defend most basic and vital liberties Ð for the right to freely communicate our ideas, thoughts and opinions with others is once again in danger. Once more the continuous dissemination of all knowledge and the unimpeded access to freely offered information is under attack and the artist's essential right, to preserve his creative vision in its original form, is questioned.' Calder & Boyars have long been subject to a sustained campaign from a politically motivated censorial group. the DPP is to prosecute Calder at the old Bailey this autumnÉ His fate will determine the future permissive or oppressive climate. We must help him now!" The high-profile trial duly opened at the Old Bailey in November 1967. In a highly controversial move, the trial judge, Graham Rogers, directed that no women be allowed on the jury, claiming they might be "embarrassed" by the book's graphic depictions of homosexuality and prostitution. The prosecution presented witnessesÑincluding prominent religious figures like the Reverend David SheppardÑwho claimed reading the book had "depraved" or psychologically damaged them. Though the defense brought on towering literary figures like Frank Kermode and Anthony Burgess to argue its literary merit, the all-male jury found the book obscene The publishing house was fined and ordered to pay heavy court costs. In a landmark appeal in 1968 led by John Mortimer QC the verdict was squashed and the heavy fine rescinded. Calder immediately put out a post trial edition of 'Last exit to Brooklyn.'"
