Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book authentically reveals the early creation and hardships faced by The First Canadians, a division that emerged as one of the British army's most lauded units in WWI. The author, who served as an officer in the division, provides an immersive account of the unit's formation in 1914 from disparate, often unruly recruits. Through historical context and exclusive anecdotes, the author illustrates the rigorous training, camaraderie, and eventual heroism of these soldiers. From the trenches of Ypres to the Somme offensive, the author captures the horrors, triumphs, and human spirit that defined The First Canadians' unique role in the war. The book underscores the transformative power of discipline, training, and shared sacrifice in forging a legendary fighting force. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.…

Contact seller5-star sellerNo Binding. Condition: Fine. This is an original autograph letter signed (ALS) by Arthur Hunt Chute (1889/1890-1929), a prominent author, journalist, explorer, and World War I veteran. Though born in Stillman Valley, Illinois, his parents moved the family back to their native Nova Scotia in 1892, where he grew up in Halifax and Wolfville. He was highly educated, attending Acadia University (graduating in 1910), Newton, and Edinburgh University. Before his military service, he worked as a war correspondent covering conflicts in the early part of the 20th century. When World War I broke out in 1914, Chute enlisted in the Canadian Army, serving as an officer with the Canadian Army Artillery from 1915 to 1917. His military career ended in 1917 when he was honorably discharged due to a burst eardrum and shell shock. He channeled these brutal experiences into his gripping and famous 1918 war memoir, The Real Front. Following the war, Chute's deep respect for the sea, travel, and adventure drove his career as a fiction writer and journalist, leading him to author books such as The Mutiny of the Flying Spray, Far Gold, and The Crested Seas. His adventurous life was tragically cut short on September 22, 1929, when his plane crashed into Lake Manitoba. The letter is addressed to "Mr Iles," who is undoubtedly George Iles (1852-1942), a well-known Canadian-American author, book collector, and philanthropist. Chute writes from his home in Wolfville, Nova Scotia, noting that he is "back safe in the bosom of my family," a poignant statement given the ongoing World War. He thanks Iles for generously augmenting his library and discusses reading The Map of Life (by W.E.H. Lecky), a book on Sir Charles Tupper, and The New Era in Canada. Most notably, Chute mentions being laid up with a "bad attack in my head lately," which is preventing him from writing. Given that he had recently been discharged from the Western Front for shell shock and a burst eardrum, this statement is a direct, historical reference to his physical and psychological war injuries. This is an exceptional piece of literary and military history linking two important men of letters, made even more poignant by Chute's adventurous life and tragic death in aviation history. Complete English Transcription My dear Mr Iles: I am back safe in the bosom of my family and enjoying my books. My library has been greatly augmented thanks to your generosity. I just finished reading "The Map of Life" by Lecky. I also read your copy of Sir Charles Tupper. Thanks for the "New Era in Canada" just received, I shall read it with profit. I was laid up with a bad attack in my head lately & I am not doing any writing for a while till I get a good rest. I value most highly that set of Burns. Hope to see you in New York in September ever your friend Arthur Hunt Chute. Wolfville, N. S July 17th 18. Signed by Author(s). …
