First Edition
Hardcover. Small 4to. Half brown calf with marbled paper over boards and old but neat and discreet brown cloth tape to spine. (Ca. 100pp). Tissue-guarded frontispiece, tissue-guarded full-page plates, illustrations. Very good. Mildly edgeworn, with (as noted) spine only replaced with sturdy and neat brown cloth tape. Unusual prospectus for the "Centennial Edition" of this 1905 eight-volume set, subtitled "Together with The Essay on Lincoln, by Carl Schurz / The Address on Lincoln, by Joseph H. Choate / and The Life of Lincoln, by Noah Brooks." Originally published by G.P. Putnam's Sons in various formats ("Collector's Federal Edition," "Connoisseur's Federal Edition" and "Constitutional Edition"), then reprinted by Collier. The 8-volume Collier set is fairly common, but this prospectus for it is seldom encountered. Despite spine, a quite handsome and internally fine copy. MONAGHAN 1466 note.
