Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book is an extended list of epitaphs from British India in the era of the Raj, giving insights into military and civilian lives and deaths in the 19th century. The author has travelled widely through the Indian subcontinent to locate and record inscriptions that are increasingly falling into disrepair, and collected together biographical details of the people commemorated. The collection runs from the first British in India to soldiers, statesmen, and civil servants who died in the 1857 Indian Rebellion. The diversity of epitaphs included highlights the social changes, which took place during this period and the shared experience of death in a foreign land and uncertain times. The book will appeal to anyone interested in the history of the British Empire and military history. It's also an invaluable resource for genealogists and family historians whose ancestors served in India. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.

Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. 2nd Edition. 8vo., xvi., 354pp., frontispiece, b/w illustrations, maps, plans (1 folding), appendix and index, original blindstamped cloth with spine titled in gilt, A near fine bright, clean and tightly bound copy of this excellent work on Morocco. Ex Libris Wilfrid Blunt with his signature and date (Eton, March 1942) in pencil on blank verso of frontispiece. Wilfrid Jasper Walter Blunt was an art teacher and writer. Blunt was art master at Haileybury College from 1923-1937, Drawing Master at Eton from 1938-1959 and Curator of the Watts Gallery from 1959-1983. He also wrote twenty-seven books. In 1872, the Irish physician Arthur Leared travelled to Morocco. Arriving at Tangier, he travelled to Casablanca, El Jadida, Essaouria, Marrakesh and Safi. Leared recorded his experiences in the country, writing that despite its proximity to Britain, far less is known of the interior of Morocco than of such remote countries as China and Japan . He published this account in 1876 and made two further visits to the country in 1877 and the summer of 1879. While on his journey through Morocco, Leared made observations on the climate and regarded it as beneficial for people suffering from illnesses afflicting the chest, particularly tuberculosis. Shortly before his death in 1879, he acquired a parcel of land near Tangier with the intention of establishing a convalescent hospital. In accordance with language used during the period, Leared referred to the Moroccan people by the name Moor . This name, which has, at various times been applied to the people, art, architecture and culture of North Africa as well as the medieval Islamic states of southern Spain and Portugal (known as Al-Andalus), is now seen by Muslims as offensive and discriminatory and has fallen out of use.

2pp., 12mo. In good condition, on lightly-aged paper. Addressed to 'Arthur C. Blunt, Esq', with salutation to 'My dear Cecil'. With regard to 'Mr. Wigram's letter' he writes that he 'would rather not dramatize a novel, and did I feel an inclination to do so I don't think I am at all a good man for the work'. He nevertheless asks the recipient to inform Wigram that he is 'complimented by his and Lord Desart's proposal'. The postscript is mildly amusing: 'P.S. I hope I am not liable to misconstruction in enquiring after your Housemaid's Knee'.
