"As early as 1829 - Arnold Adolph Berthold (1803-1861) was 26 years young - appeared his "Lehrbuch der Physiologie des Menschen und der Thiere" in two volumes, which was republished many times. The textbook was dedicated to Alexander Freiherr von Humboldt (1769-1859). The third edition appeared in 1848, the year before Berthold published his transplantation experiments. Berthold was strongly influenced by the Naturphilosophie which flourished in Germany during his younger years and which must be traced back to his visit to Lorenz Oken. This positive attitude towards Naturphilosophie consequently influenced his textbook of physiology where he pointed out his concept of the organism as a microcosm responding to influences from the macrocosm, an old hippocratic doctrine. According to this concept the anatomical links between the parts of the body where maintained by the blood circulation which was considered to be the mediator of the bodily integrations and the pupils of Naturphilosophie were familiar with this humoral concept of blood mediated interrelations. So Bertholds textbook bears strong evidence of his interest in the humoral mechanisms and their role in maintaining the integrations of the body. On the other hand, the modern experimental pathologists and physiologists refused such humoral interactions. " Jost Benedum, The early history of endocrine cell transplantation.

Erst A.
