Dass Deutschland es im Sommer 1914 zum Ausbruch des Weltkrieges hat kommen lassen, obwohl man sich der militärischen Überlegenheit der Gegner bewusst war, ist rätselhaft. Seit Fritz Fischers grundlegendem Werk »Griff nach der Weltmacht« (1961) ist darüber intensiv geforscht und kontrovers debattiert worden. Der Autor dieses Buches vertritt in der Frage der Kriegsursachen die These, dass vor allem irrationale Faktoren wie ein überzogenes Ehr- und Pflichtbewusstsein sowie die starre Bündnistreue gegenüber Österreich-Ungarn entscheidend waren für die Beteiligung des Deutsches Reiches am Ersten Weltkrieg. Dabei betont er, dass es Österreich-Ungarn war, welches die Initiative ergriff, und Deutschland reagierte. Die Hauptschuld an der Eskalation und dem Ausgang der Krise weist er den deutschen Diplomaten zu, die nicht den notwendigen Schritt zurück getan hätten.
