Writing at the outbreak of WW II, which was darkness, Hunter had an experience of seeing the light/Light glistening off the leaves of the trees. In the Foreword he asks, "Do we not, with a sensitiveness denied to plants and trees, have it in us to say Yes to the Light? This Light permits us to cherish darkness in our wills, but it ever expanding and integrating life. We cannot argue it out of or into existence. Nor can we exhaust its meaning with words. What confronts us is the Light in Whom is no darkness at all or fever of time. It is adequate and can afford to wait, till every man, answering what may be his deepest desire, gives a positive answer and becomes new." A book for our own troubled time as well! Allan Armstrong Hunter [1893-1962] was also the author of THE AUDACITY OF FAITH (1949) and CHRISTIANS IN THE ARENA (1958). A Canadian by birth, Hunter moved to the United States where he was educated at Princeton Seminary and Union Theological Seminary. He was ordained in the Presbyterian Church and in 1926 began a long and notable ministry at Mt. Hollywood Congregational Church in Los Angeles. His papers reside at USC.

Hardcover. Quarto. Hardcover. Watercolor illustrated paper boards in illustrated jacket. xv, 384 pages : illustrations (chiefly color); 30 cm. "An examination of the last years of the artist Édouard Manet's life and work"--Provided by publisher. "The name Manet evokes the provocative, heroically scaled pictures he painted in the 1860s for the Salon, but in the late 1870s and early 1880s the artist produced quite a different body of work: stylish portraits of actresses and demimondaines, luscious still lifes, delicate pastels, intimate watercolors, and impressionistic scenes of suburban gardens and Parisian cafés. Often dismissed as too pretty and superficial by critics, these later works reflect Manet's elegant social world, propose a radical new alignment of modern art with fashionable femininity, and record the artist's unapologetic embrace of beauty and visual pleasure in the face of death. Featuring nearly three hundred illustrations and nine fascinating essays by established and emerging Manet specialists, a technical analysis of the late Salon painting Jeanne (Spring), a selection of the artist's correspondence, a chronology, and more, Manet and Modern Beauty brings a diverse range of approaches to bear on a little-studied area of this major artist's oeuvre. This volume is published to accompany an exhibition on view at the Art Institute of Chicago May 26 to September 8, 2019, and at the J. Paul Getty Museum at the Getty Center October 8, 2019, to January 12, 2020."--from publisher. VG/VG-. Jacket has bumping at head/tail of spine and corners. Boards have fore edge bumping. Interior clean besides small stamp inside stating "withdrawn from an art museums library".
