Faint white stain, about the size of a nickle, in upper right of front cover. A little rubbing and light fraying to spine head, some rubbing to spine heel. Short white scuff mark near top right corner of spine. Lettering on spine a little dulled, but perfectly legible. Light rubbing to tips. A little yellowing to decorative pastedowns & endpapers. Pages yellowing, mainly around edges. Hinges tight, no writing inside. Armes, a captain at the time, was involved in The Battle of the Saline River in August 1867, one of the first recorded combats of the Buffalo Soldiers of the U.S. 10th Cavalry. In trouble with his superior officers from time to time during his career, and constantly being bailed out by whoever the then US President happened to be, Armes was eventually vindicated after 31 years and promoted to the rank of Colonel.
