First edition. Hardcover. Prelims a little foxed, with a prize book-plate on the fly-leaf, as well as a small bookseller's label, o/w very good in good price-clipped dustjacket with a few professionally closed tears and a couple small restored chips. A juvenile suspense novel, set in Italy in the closing days of the Second World War. Illustrated in b/w by Edward Ardizzone.
Third printing (the first & second were in 1960 & 1971, with pictorial papered boards and jackets, but this third printing was published with laminated (glazed) boards and I suspect, as usual for the time, with no dustjacket). Hardcover. Quarto-size. Endpapers noticeably foxed (not extending to inner pages), otherwise very good. Wonderful colour illustrations by Ardizzone for this story (one of his less well-known ones) of a small boy ("clever at making things.") and his parents and disbelieving peer group (except for a little girl his age), and most local shop-keepers and tradesmen, all of whom are downright rude and discouraging about Johnny's plan to make a grandfather clock, from scratch. Last laugh goes to the bright and dogged child! And hoorah to the blacksmith who helped.
