H. White (1906-64), travelled about in Western Ireland, seeking what he could find, whether it was game birds for hunting, or folklore for documenting and unravelling. He was met with suspicion by some, rumour occasionally had it that he was up to no good, a spy, no less, with his secret maps and documents hidden in a pocket of his red setter Brownie's cloth coat, for this was during the World War II years. White refused to take part in the fighting, arrived in Ireland on the day the war broke out and spent much of the next decade there, in informal conscientious objector status. The Godstone of the title turns out to be a mysterious stone shape, the naomhog, which was rumoured to have special powers, though whether pagan or Christian being up for debate, while the Blackymor was one Mr. James Montgomery-Marjoribanks, from Nigeria by way of England, who travelled from small village fair to small village fair flogging patent medicines and practising his formidable skills in healing massage, White encountered him unexpectedly in the dining room of a small inn. Edward Ardizzone's (1900-79), illustrations are a vivid enhancement of the text, capturing both the stark beauty, undoubted dignity and frequent quiet humour of the situations and people White portrays in words. Jacket and illustrations by Edward Ardizzone (illustrator).

Add to basketThird printing (the first & second were in 1960 & 1971, with pictorial papered boards and jackets, but this third printing was published with laminated (glazed) boards and I suspect, as usual for the time, with no dustjacket). Hardcover. Quarto-size. Endpapers noticeably foxed (not extending to inner pages), otherwise very good.… Wonderful colour illustrations by Ardizzone for this story (one of his less well-known ones) of a small boy ("clever at making things.") and his parents and disbelieving peer group (except for a little girl his age), and most local shop-keepers and tradesmen, all of whom are downright rude and discouraging about Johnny's plan to make a grandfather clock, from scratch. Last laugh goes to the bright and dogged child! And hoorah to the blacksmith who helped.
