Neben dem Hinterfragen der Grenzen von Normalität und Ästhetik der Gesellschaft erweiterte sie die künstlerische Fotografie um scharf akzentuierte psychologische Aspekte. Diane Arbus war die erste amerikanische Fotografin, deren Arbeit bei der Biennale in Venedig ausgestellt wurde (1972).
