On se souvient avant tout de Roberto Rossellini comme d un grand maître du cinéma italien neoréaliste. Or à peu près la moitié de l uvre de Rossellini - en minutage - est consacrée à l his…toire, dont la plus grande partie pour la télévision, de 1963 à 1974 - soit la moitié de sa carrière. Durant cette décennie Rossellini a eu une activité intense : réalisation de films, élaboration de projets, écriture d essais, nombreux entretiens, dans lesquels il expose les lignes générales de son grand projet d encyclopédie historique. Son objectif, révolutionnaire et absolument inédit au cinéma, était d arriver à une éducation intégrale grâce à une reconstruction totale du passé de l humanité. Il faudrait remonter aux sommes du Moyen-Age pour trouver un équivalent à sa démarche : l histoire est pour lui une école de vie. C est à travers la télévision que Rossellini croit pouvoir réaliser son aventure didactique et instaurer le dialogue entre les hommes, parce qu elle est alors un art naissant, qui s adresse à des millions de téléspectateurs. Néanmoins, cette phase de son activité reste la moins connue. Le changement évident du registre stylistique du cinéaste a beaucoup déconcerté son public et la critique. C est justement dans le but de mieux faire connaître cette partie de son uvre qu Adriano Apra réunit dans cet ouvrage les principaux textes et entretiens dans lesquels Rossellini a exposé son projet.
