Estudiosos envolvidos numa série de disciplinas como economia, sociologia, geografia social, e…studos de desenvolvimento e antropologia chegaram à conclusão de que para os camponeses a agricultura é apenas uma actividade económica entre muitas (Ellis 2000b; Rigg 2005a; Rigg 2005b; Schüren 2003; Start e Johnson 2004). Embora seja agora amplamente reconhecido que os camponeses estão hoje activos num amplo espectro de actividades de trabalho para além da agricultura, o mesmo tem acontecido em períodos anteriores (Schüren 2003). Hoje, porém, os estudiosos testemunham que o envolvimento dos camponeses em actividades agrícolas está de facto em declínio e os camponeses estão mais frequentemente envolvidos nas chamadas 'actividades não agrícolas' do que anteriormente (ver Eder 1993; Hayami e Kikuchi 2000; Molle et al. 2001 para casos no Sudeste Asiático). Esta constatação levou à abordagem do modo de vida, que se traduz na forma como os camponeses ganham realmente a vida. Mesmo que a agricultura ainda desempenhe um papel central na vida dos habitantes rurais, é apenas uma das diferentes formas pelas quais eles ganham a vida (Yaro 2006:126-127).
