Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Two bifolia (leaves not consecutive) written in double columns of an angular German romanesque hand, ruled lightly in plummet, adiastematic neumes, blank spaces between words filled with a single red line, marginal differentia, one three-line initial and several two-line initials in red, some with guide-letters, smaller initials in red or in black touched with red, rubrics; recovered from use in bindings and with consequent staining and wear, trimmed at fore-edges just affecting a few rubrics, initials and differentia, a few natural vellum flaws, but generally in very good condition and entirely legible; loose in mid-nineteenth-century marbled boards, large paper label on upper cover describing contents, smaller paper label with class-mark 'AR.2.7-18'. 336 x 234 mm (text area 255 x 200 mm).Two bifolia from a notably early antiphonal. Provenance: from the library of the Redemptorists of France, with their nineteenth-century stamp on recto of first leaf. The library class-mark label on the upper cover of the binding is probably also theirs. The Redemptorists, a society of missionary priests founded in 1732 by Alphonsus Liguori (d.1787, canonised 1839) at Scala in Italy, had spread to France by the middle of the nineteenth century, and there were foundations in Alsace in 1842, Saint-Nicolas-de-Port in 1845 and two in Savoy in 1847.

First Edition
First Edition. Large initial (c.124 x 129mm), the initial in pale pink against a quadrangular background of deep blue and enclosing the Nativity of the Virgin Mary, Anne lying pensively on a wooden bed before an arched background and the infant Mary being bathed by two nurses in the foreground, the whole painted in shades of blue, pink, orange, brown, and white and with both burnished and shell gold, the verso with part of two lines of text and music in square and diamond-shaped notation on four-line red staves (stave height c.30mm); trimmed to the edges of the quadrangular blue background, slightly rubbed with some loss of burnished gold, but generally in very good condition.A very fine large initial painted in a style associated with the Master of the Gradual of Cortona, an artist named for a Franciscan gradual produced c.1290 for the church of San Francesco in Cortona (now Vatican City, BAV, MS Ross.612). The architectural setting is unusual, as is the frontal pose of the small naked infant being washed in a bath shaped like a baptismal font, a composition derived ultimately from Byzantine models. For a closely comparable initial, probably by the same hand and conceivably from the same parent manuscript, see Christie's sale of 13 July 2022, lot 3, a complete leaf with an historiated initial of the Annunciation (stave height also c.30mm). Visible beneath the initial in the upper left-hand corner is the name 'marie', doubtless a direction (or part thereof) to the artist. The text on the reverse comprises part of the antiphon '[Benedicta tu in mu]lieribus et be[nedictus fructus ve]ntris tui'. Provenance: Formerly in the Albright-Knox Art Gallery, Buffalo, NY, acquired with the Elisabeth H.Gates Fund, 1940. Language: Latin.

A complete folio leaf (388 x 287 mm, text area 297 x205 mm), ten lines written in red ink in a gothic liturgical script, ruled in red ink, diamond-shaped musical notation entirely in burnished gold outlined in dark brown ink on ten four-line red staves, large illuminated initial 'E' (Exultet jam angelica, 78 x 74mm) of blue leafy design set against a quadrangular panel of burnished and shell gold framed in pink and enclosing two leafy x-shaped motifs in green, border extension of green foliage enclosing burnished gold bezants, smaller initials in green ink, green ink dividers indicating the relationship of the notes to the words, extensive penwork flourishing in green ink in lower margin of recto and in both upper and lower margins of verso, penwork flourishing in brown ink along inner and outer margins of both recto and verso, rubrics; some light soiling and smudging but generally in excellent condition. An unusual and striking antiphonal leaf written entirely in red and notated entirely in burnished gold, signalling the importance of the text for Holy Saturday. The Exultet or Exsultet, also known as the praeconium paschale, is a hymn of praise sung by the deacon in celebration of the Resurrection after theLumen Christiprocession has entered the church for the solemn service of the Easter Vigil. It is sung in connection with the blessing and offering of the Paschal Candle, the light of which symbolizes the glory of the risen Christ. The burnished gold notes here may thus have served a practical as well as a symbolic and sacramental purpose, remaining visible to the deacon in the semi-darkness of the church.

No Binding. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. A cutting, c. 265 × 115 mm; with part of four lines of text in gothic script and music on four-line staves ruled in red, the painted initial I c. 150 × 60 mm, depicting a full-length barefoot figure, probably an Old Testament prophet, probably illustrating the mass on the 17th Sunday after Pentecost, Iu[stus es domine et rec]tum (You are just and right, Lord), preceded by the Offertory Domine in a[uxilium] and the Communion Domine me[morabor] , the verso with part of the Verse [Beat]a gens [cuius est dominus] ; only the incipits of these lesser texts are given, and in each case a superscript number in red Roman numerals directs the reader to the folio on which the full text may be found. The style of illumination is unusual and difficult to localise with precision. The artist seems to be aware of the work of the late 13th-century Maestro di Imola, from whom he probably derived his palette, ornamental details, and perhaps even the manner of painting rather boneless figures (see especially the exceptionally thin wrists here), sometimes, as here, depicted as if hanging in mid-air like a ghost. There is also something of the Bolognese primo stile , supporting an origin in Emilia-Romagna. On the Maestro di Imola, see Fabrizio Lollini, in Dizionario biografico dei miniatori italiani: secoli IX XVI, ed. by Milvia Bollati (Milan: Sylvestre Bonnard, 2004), pp. 684 86; and for Bolognese illumination of the period, see Alessando Conti, La miniatura bolognese: scuole e botteghe 1270-1340 (Bologna: Nuova Alfa, 1981).

An attractive leaf. The text is a post communion prayer in Latin to celebrate the conception of Mary: domine sacrificii suanitatis presta ut qui hodie marie conceptionem iubilando celebrat O Lord offer the sacrifice of wisdom as he who today celebrates Mary's conception by rejoicing etc.

An attractive leaf. The text "Post communionem, hĉc nos, quĉsumus, Domine, divini sacramenti perceptio." is a Latin prayer used in the Catholic Church during the celebration of the Mass. It is part of the post-communion prayer, which is said after the distribution of the Eucharist. The English translation of the prayer is: "Having received the sacrament of salvation, we beseech You, O Lord, that through the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary, whom You have given us as a Mother and whose festival we celebrate, we may obtain with the help of Your grace the eternal happiness which it promises. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.".

No Binding. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. A single parchment leaf, 485 × 360 mm, with seven lines of text in rounded gothic script and music in square notation on four-line red staves, the text comprising: the end of the Judith antiphon Domine deus rex omnipotens libera , the beginning of the Esther response Domine rex omnipotens indictione tua , followed by the verse Exaudi orationem nostram and the response Conforta me rex sanctorum , with A LARGE HISTORIATED INITIAL D depicting King Ahasuerus, enthroned and with his feet on a green cushion, extending his rod to touch the head of Esther, who kneels before him; the upper margin with a post-medieval folio number XXX in red, the two responses marked in the adjacent margins 1 and 2 (and II ); with insignificant creases in the lower margin, overall in fine condition. Text In the Divine Office, there were daily biblical readings according to the liturgical season (Advent to Epiphany, Epiphany to Lent, and so on). After Corpus Christi (about two months after Easter) there were a variable number of summer weeks until the next Advent (because the dates of both Easter and Advent vary), and the daily readings were taken from the Old Testament books of Kings, Wisdom, Job, Tobit, Judith, Esther, Maccabees, and Ezekiel. The readings from Judith were used from the first Sunday after 20 September, and if this occurred early enough in the month, the Judith readings would be followed by those from Esther, as represented by the present leaf. Illumination The origin of this leaf is hard to determine. The predominantly blue and orange palette looks Bolognese at first sight, but this does not fit with the figure style, so it may be from elsewhere in Emilia-Romagna. The form of the white ornament on the blue background is typical of Umbria, however, so an origin further south is another possibility. The figures give a sense of three-dimensional volume (see, for example, the way in which the roundness of Ahasuerus s thigh and buttock is suggested by the way in which he sits on his own cloak, and the sweeping darker green lines that give volume to his foot-cushion). The subject of the initial is found in Esther, chapter 5 verse 2. Chapters 1 4 relate that the Persian king Ahasuerus banished his wife Vashti for disobedience, and selected Esther (who kept her Jewishness secret) as her replacement. Mordechai, Esther's cousin, learned of a plot by Haman, one of Ahasuerus s men, to kill all the Jews in the empire. Mordecai therefore asks Esther to use her position to intercede with the king. She reveals to him that she is Jewish, and successfully petitions him to save the Jews. The crucial moment is when she presents herself to him, And when he saw Esther the queen standing, and she pleased his eyes, and he held out toward her the golden sceptre, which he held in his hand, and she drew near .
