First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. 1st Edition. With attribution. Souvenir Edition. Original threaded cover bound within a semi hard cover for preservation by Lawrence Tibbett. Cover is blind stamped with his name in gilt. Lawrence Mervil Tibbett (November 16, 1896 - July 15, 1960) was an American opera singer and recording artist who also performed as a film actor and radio personality. A baritone, he sang leading roles with the Metropolitan Opera in New York City more than 600 times from 1923 to 1950. Signed by Preston B. Holtzendorff, Jr. ("P.B. Holzendorff, Jr. Clemson College S.C.") At Clemson College, Mr. Holtzendorff was the General Secretary of the Clemson YMCA, as well as Clemson's football coach and college swimming coach. He died on January 28, 1971, and is buried at Cemetery Hill on Clemson University's campus. Clemson University's Holtzendorff Hall is named after him. Porgy: A Folk Play by the Heywards is the precursor to Porgy & Bess. It was first produced by the Theatre Guild and presented October 10, 1927 - August 1928 at the Guild Theatre in New York City. Featuring a cast of African Americans at the insistence of its authors?a decision unusual for its time?the original production starred Frank Wilson, Evelyn Ellis, Jack Carter, and Rose McClendon. Porgy marked the Broadway directing debut of Rouben Mamoulian. This is the only known copy to exist. Extremely Rare.
