Vergleichen ist ebenso ein Vorgang alltagsweltlicher Praxis wie ein methodisches Verfahren, das in unterschiedlichen akademischen Disziplinen und Wissensbereichen verbreitet ist. Der Vergleich hat in den Kultur- und Sozialwissenschaften eine lange Tradition, die Jahrhunderte zurückreicht. Als grundlegende Methodologie, mit deren Hilfe ein systematischer und fundierter Erkenntnisgewinn möglich wäre, etablierte sich der vergleichende Ansatz bereits im ausgehenden 18. Jahrhundert, als die modernen Wissenschaften sich herausbildeten. Als eine Operation, die sich vor dem Hintergrund einer unterstellten Dimension des Gemeinsamen der zu vergleichenden Elemente vollzieht, bedarf der Vergleich eines 'tertium comparationis', das die verglichenen Elemente auf einen gemeinsamen, übergeordneten Aspekt bezieht. Für die Literatur und Kunst wird der Vergleich indes nicht zuletzt dort interessant, wo diese Annahme prekär wird und sich ein Moment des Inkommensurablen und Disparaten auftut. Die Beiträge des interdisziplinären Bands versuchen, spezifische Besonderheiten, Anwendungsmöglichkeiten, Potenziale und Grenzen des Vergleichs im Blick auf exemplarische Themengebiete und Forschungsfelder der jeweiligen Fächer auszuloten. In diesem Sinne liegt dem Band das Bestreben zugrunde, eine Balance zwischen der Profilierung und der selbstkritischen Revision der eigenen Methodologie zu erzielen.
