Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book presents a dynamic discourse on the nature of American government, as conceptualized by founding father James Buchanan. In his compelling address, Buchanan expounds upon the intricate relationship between the federal government and individual states, advocating for strict adherence to the Constitution and the preservation of states' rights. The text delves into the contentious debates over slavery, the role of popular sovereignty, and the dangers of corruption within the political system. The author's insights on these matters offer a window into the ideological battles that shaped the nation's early political landscape, providing valuable context for understanding the development of American democracy. Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book is an anthology of powerful speeches delivered by orators throughout history. The speeches, given from antiquity to the early republic, shaped not only their time but the very fabric of democracy itself. The author argues that while the orators' ideas are historically specific, their power to inspire, rally, and persuade remains important in today's world. The book explains the historical context and enduring significance of each address, exploring themes such as liberty, government, justice, and the role of the individual in society. The author's insights into the techniques and rhetorical devices used by these legendary speakers combine with the texts of the speeches themselves to offer a unique perspective on the history of oratory and its enduring significance. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. Seller: The Curiosity Book Shop, Hardwick, MA, U.S.A.
Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Custom-bound by prior owner in dark green cloth with gilt-stamped spine; prior owner initials at lower spine. Decorative endpapers. Periodical beginning with Volume I, No. 1, July, 1933, and continuing after April 1934 bi-monthly through Volume IV, Number 6, November-December 1937. According to Charles Federer, author of an article entitled "The Story of 'The Sky,'" ("Sky and Telescope, November, 1986), "The Telescope" was a magazine for amateur astronomers published between 1931 and 1941; it later became "Sky and Telescope." The original editor was Harlan Stetson, director of the Perkins Observatory in Ohio. When Stetson moved to Cambridge, Massachusetts in 1934, he brought the magazine with him. Publishing duties were assumed jointly by the Harvard College Observatory and the Bond Astronomical Club, and the magazine became a bimonthly publication (it was previously published quarterly). A copyright page at the front of this bound volume appears to have been printed after the merger, but it is bound here in front of the 1933 issues that make up the first part of Volume I (July, October, 1933 and April, 1934). The June, 1934 issue states that it is the first to be sponsored by the Bond Astrological Club. Accordingly, the prior owner neatly affixed small stickers to the first three mastheads and wrote in "Volume 1" to clarify the year's run. Very light rubbing to cover extremities. Few moderate superficial scratches to front board; faint scuffing to boards. Single minute spot stain to front endpapers. Some issues are lightly vertically creased at the centerpoint, due to either past storage or mailing. Clean and tight.
