Se cumplían entonces los setenta años de vida del gran novelista…venezolano, desterrado en México, y los veinticinco de la aparición de Doña Bárbara. Andrés Iduarte estuvo vinculado siempre a la obra y a la persona de Rómulo Gallegos. Formó parte del grupo de jóvenes hispanoamericanos que vivió en España muy cerca del novelista, que asistió al éxito de sus libros en Europa o que tuvo el privilegio de leerlos apenas escritos sus originales. Formó Iduarte, pues, parte de un círculo de amigos íntimos del gran escritor que compartieron con él aquellos momentos de creación intelectual de sus años en España, en donde Gallegos pasó su primer destierro político. Al morir Gallegos ahora, en 1969, a la edad de ochenta y cuatro anos, MONTE ÁVILA ha solicitado del Prof. Andrés Iduarte completar con un capítulo final, escrito especialmente para esta edición, su libro sobre el novelista venezolano. Se modifica de esa manera la relación en el tiempo y lo que fueron veinte años de amistad y comunicación intelectual dejan a un lado la cifra del tiempo, ya borrada por la muerte del novelista. Así, nuestra Editorial ofrece ahora este libro, Con Rómulo Gallegos, más allá de las circunstancias del tiempo. Estos ensayos de Iduarte constituyen un testimonio humano de primera magnitud, además de que son penetrantes y sagaces interpretaciones críticas del mundo creado y recreado por Rómulo Gallegos. Andrés Iduarte es Profesor de Literatura hispanoamericana en la Universidad de Columbia, en Nueva York. Ha escrito importantes estudios, además de estos sobre Gallegos, en torno a grandes figuras del pensamiento y de la cultura de América Latina. Entre éstos se destaca su obra Martí, escritor, publicada en 1945.
