Based on the 1951 Swedish novel "Sommaren med Monika" by Per Anders Fogelstrom.…Conceived as a vehicle for Andersson by Ingmar Bergman, who were intimately involved at the time, it was Andersson's first major role and would make her an international star. Bergman and Andersson would continue working together for the next three decades, Andersson starring in some of Bergman's most acclaimed films. Two disaffected youths, Harry (Lars Ekborg) and Monicka (Andersson), fall in love and run away for a fleeting idyllic summer in a remote archipelago. Controversial at the time of it's release for its then ground-breaking nudity, its US rights were purchased by Exploitation film presenter Kroger Babb in 1955, editing out over a third of the film to emphasize the nudity and renaming the film "Monika, the Story of a Bad Girl."
