Employing his characteristic humor and social observation, Rowlandson produced a series of caricatural aquatints depicting contemporary life interrupted by the presence of Death. These scenes were complemented by the metrical illustrations of William Combe (17421823), the prolific writer best known for his collaboration with Rowlandson on the "Doctor Syntax" series. This work represents a quintessential example of Regency-era satire, reinterpreting the medieval "Danse Macabre" through the lens of early 19th-century British life. Unlike earlier versions of the theme, Rowlandsons Death is an active, often mischievous participant in the follies of modern societyfound in the kitchen of the glutton, the study of the astronomer, and the ballroom of the elite. Vol. I, page 171, extra plate from another Boydell work. Vol II, page 246 plate repaired. The project was intended to be part of a larger series of British Rivers, but only the Thames was completed. It follows the River from its source in Gloucestershire to the North Sea, illustrating the scenery and architecture along the way.

Regarding the scope of the envisioned work Abbey quoted f…rom an advertisement which appeared on the front wrapper of the Gentleman?s Magazine for Jan 1792: ?Each Volume will contain at least Forty Plates, engraved in Aquatint, by Mr.Stadler &c from accurate drawings made by Mr. Farington of the most beautiful and interesting Parts of the River it records; with about Three Hundred of pages of Letterpress; and a Map, describing the Course of the River. ? ?The Materials for the Whole of the Work are almost entirely completed.
