In 1706, he purchased Tom's Coffee House on the Strand, where he started selling tea alongside coffee, eventually focusing on tea by 1734. Twining expanded his business and bought Dial House in Twickenham, which remained in the family for generations. After his death, his son Daniel inherited the business. Twining's legacy endures, with the company still thriving today. He is buried at St Mary's Church, Twickenham. and William Twining (17901835) was a British military surgeon who worked in the Indian Subcontinent. Born to Reverend William Twining, his family hailed from Twining, Gloucestershire, with distant ties to Richard Twining of the Twinings tea family. Twining studied medicine at Guy's Hospital and served as personal surgeon to Edward Paget, Governor of Ceylon. In 1824, he became Assistant Surgeon to the Bengal Establishment. In 1835, he wrote the first modern clinical description of kala azar, calling it "tropical sprue," identifying its symptoms and linking it to tropical climates. His work contributed significantly to understanding the disease. Begins: 'The task you set me was a task indeed [.] my first attempt at translation'. He comments on some of the difficulties involved ('The… Cara so often repeated in the original is beautiful in repetition while it's angliciz'd Dear is so degraded by vulgar use'). Ends first page with transcription of 'the Bishop's Charming Elegy', and the words 'Now don't look on the other side - But if you can't help it please to shut your critical eye Mr Richard'. A further discussion of the poem and its translation conclude the letter.
