Giuseppe Morpurgo fu critico letterario e professore in vari licei italiani, autore di numerose traduzioni, antologie e saggi rivolti agli studenti; docente al Liceo Gioberti di Torino, animò nella città una scuola clandestina per allievi ebrei quando fu allontanato dall'insegnamento a causa delle leggi razziali, nel 1938. Quest'opera postuma, in cui a partire da alcuni versi del poema dantesco l'autore offre una «descrizione viva e palpitante di momenti di vita di Francesca, di Fra Dolcino, di Mosca dei Lamberti, di altri e di altri ancora», fu pubblicata in due volumi nella serie delle strenne della tipografia torinese Vincenzo Bona, per i capodanno del 1970 e del 1971; il primo volume contiene un ricordo dell'autore di Giulio Vincenzo Bona, il secondo un?appendice contenente le allegorie o incisioni che Antonio Zatta, tipografo in Venezia, premise ai singoli canti della Divina Commedia da lui stampata nel 1757-1758. Rarissimo e toccante documento storico postale-militare risalente al periodo della Seconda Guerra Mondiale (16 Marzo 1942), interamente manoscritto a inchiostro nero su un foglio ripiegato per complessive due facciate. La prima pagina presenta l'intestazione ufficiale a stampa "Dott. GIUSEPPE SAVINA - Medico Chirurgo - AGUGLIANO (Ancona)", sotto la quale il mittente ha integrato a mano le coordinate belliche del suo reparto d'assegnazione: "109° Btg. CC.NN. - P.M. 70 A". La lettera è indirizzata al "Carissimo Vincenzino" (il magistrato Vincenzo Savina, qui chiamato affettuosamente con il diminutivo che ne conferma il legame di parentela o strettissima fratellanza). Il Dott. Giuseppe scrive subito dopo il rientro dalla licenza, segnalando di essere stato comandato presso il 109° Battaglione Camicie Nere a Ersek (località montana dell'Albania meridionale, al confine greco), a 1030 metri d'altezza. Il testo esprime il profondo disagio morale e la solitudine del fronte: "avverto una grande tristezza in certe ore del giorno, quando non so più cosa fare. Ma pazienza, spero enormemente nella Provvidenza Divina". La seconda facciata prosegue con ricchi dettagli sul network familiare e sulle carriere di altri funzionari d'epoca (viene citato Arnoldo, trasferito alla Prefettura di Firenze) e si rammarica del silenzio da casa e da Messina dopo la partenza di Vincenzo per la nuova sede giudiziaria di Urbino. La missiva si chiude con una calorosa esortazione a descrivere la nuova sistemazione nelle Marche e reca la firma autografa "Tuo Pino" (diminutivo familiare di Giuseppe).
