Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book focuses on how a renewed war in Europe would be disastrous for Great Britain. Written in the mid-1700s, the author, a self-proclaimed old Whig, presents an astute analysis of Britain's financial and international standing at the precipice of a potential conflict with Spain. The author warns that a war would be ill-advised and emphasizes the dangers of allowing domestic politics around succession to drive foreign policy. The author presents a range of historical examples to illustrate how Britain has often initiated wars to the detriment of its own interests and the people. The book carefully lays out arguments for peace in favor of economic stability and against risking further conflict. Ultimately, this book offers a compelling case for taking the path of diplomacy over war and provides astute analysis of the risks of geopolitical entanglements that remain relevant today. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.…

FIRST EDITION, 30 lines before the imprint including printed signature: An old Whig. Little Britain, July 27, 1803, (290 x 230 mm), frayed where untrimmed at edges, closed marginal tear (<200 mm), very good. Scarce rousing broadside against Napoleon's intended invasion of England, for which he amassed troops and barges at Boulogne but which never materialised thanks to Royal Naval blockades. The Old Whig here exhorts all lovers of British liberty to put aside internal division and prejudices: 'Be ready with your Bayonet for the first Hostile Foot upon your Shore'. In this variant line 4 ends 'to victory', in another it ends 'to Vic-'. COPAC records copies of both at just BL, Bodley, NLS, to which WorldCat adds 5 in the US (Harvard, Yale, Kansas, Stanford, UCLA). (Klingberg and Hustvedt 13).…
