Original brown cloth boards stained and soiled with corners worn, spine cloth perished with back-strip paper completely exposed. Front hinge splitting with several quires pulled but binding otherwise remains reasonably firm. Missing front free endpaper, front flyleaf, and perhaps a half-title; first leaf present is title/copyright leaf (pages i-ii). Strong moisture staining and soiling to leaves as well as foxing and toning. Bottom corner of rear free endpaper missing. Posthumous collection of criticism by Edgar Allan Poe with a biographical sketch by his literary opponent Rufus Wilmot Griswold who fraudulently claimed to be the author's literary executor.
