Smith was born July 7, 1903 in Killeen, Texas, the only child of the late Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Reece Brown. She was an honor graduate of Belton High School and received her BA degree from Mary Hardin-Baylor College at Belton in 1947 with a major in Journalism. Madie B. went to work for the Belton Bureau of the Temple Daily Telegram in 1929 and retired in 1970. Throughout her career she was a dedicated and loyal employee of her newspaper and was widely known throughout Central Texas through her writing about the courthouse, Belton, and Central Texas. In addition to the day-to-day news coverage which she provided for the Telegram, she found time to write her daily human interest feature column, "Hi Neighbor."
