Remaining interior with minor signs of wear.; LIMITED EDITION OF 1,000 COPIES OF WHICH THIS IS NUMBER 884.; "For two reasons I am happy to be allowed to write a short "Foreword" to Sir Algernon Tudor-Craig's book on Armorial Porcelain; firstly, in token of our pleasant association of over thirty years; secondly, because I am delighted that Sir Algernon's unrivalled experience in this branch of collecting should be placed at the disposal of the general public. The great amount of careful research and of highly specialised knowledge that have gone to the writing of this book and to the compilation of the various lists of services contained in it, should render it invaluable. To be "personally conducted" round his collection of armorial porcelain is an unique experience. Not a piece but has its own special claim to notice-old tales of prowess in battle, illustrated by Augmentations to Arms; specimens of the services of three or four generations of one family; old scandals recalled-old memories of noted men revived by racily narrated anecdotes; odd coincidences in "matching up" various items of one service-all combine to convince one that of all forms of china collecting this particular branch is one of the most fascinating. While I appreciate and, of course, agree with the author's view that the vast majority of armorial services were of Chinese manufacture and decoration, I remember that some years ago Mr. Crisp showed to Dr. Howard and myself an original letter which he had purchased, together with some armorial china. The letter in question, which was dated, I think, in 1775, was from a Naval Lieutenant in China to his mother in the South of Ireland, and in it he stated definitely that the service which he had bought in England had been decorated to his order in China, and that he was bringing it back with him to his mother. I cannot be sure, after this lapse of time, if he mentioned the service as emanating from Lowestoft or not, but I do know that we were all three much puzzled by this contemporary evidence so contrary to our own views, and so directly opposed to the then popular theory that, while such porcelain might have been made in China, it was decorated in England. It would be interesting to know if other owners of family armorial services have any similar contemporary documentary evidence." foreword by Sir Henry Farnham Burke, K.C.V.O., C.B., F.S.A, Garter King of Arms, College of Arms, London, 15th July, 1925.…
