William Leon McBride, "Voluntary Associations: The Basis of an Ideal Model, and the 'Democratic' Failure"; Selected Bibliography, pp. 429-444. Gray textured or faux-leather boards with brilliant silver lettering on spine. Tight binding (NO cracks); sharp corners (NO curls or bumps); NO remainder marks. Clean text, Dustwrapper did its job--only flaw is previous owner name and purchase date at top right ffep. Brown dustwrapper not price-clipped ($12.50) title lettering in white across top front cover, above Contributors' list in smaller black letters, above editor name lettering in white; large eye-dazzling circular illustration of man's profile in alternating sky blue and black repetition, for 360 degrees, on lower 2/3 front cover; spine sunned to diminished brown, but all lettering in white and black still sharp and distinct, eminently readable; some wear across spine ends and nugatory wear at corners: all these peccadilloes have been backed by Archival tape and dustwrapper now in Brodart mylar which graciously forgives. Solid copy, looking little read, if at all, in that unusual, lovely gray leather or faux-leather binding. The way to read a Classic in this ostensibly little-explored field.

Former owner's pastedown sticker on the front endpaper another former owner's inked signature on adjacent endpaper. Preface of the editors: "The editors of "A Sele…ction of Latin Verse" have long held the opinion that the free annotation of Latin texts for classroom purposes is an educational mistake. In these notes, therefor, they have aimed only at removing the principal difficulties, that the student in preparation may gain a fair understanding of the meaning of the text, and that the instructor's time may not be too largely spent in giving information. It is felt that all other points should be left to the student's own work and to the resources of the classroom. For the authors, reference is made to "Fowler's History of Roman Literature,' and to "Mackail's Latin Literature." Comments on matters of biography, geography, and mythology are made only where the names do not appear in the classical dictionary recommendef for reference." 63 pages. *NOTE: Also have aforementioned "A Selection of Latin Verse" book in online inventory. Former owner's pastedown sticker on front endpaper along with a later former owner's inked signature on adjacent endpaper. Preface of the editors: "This compilat…ion of Latin verse has been prepared to meet the needs of the Freshman class in Williams College. Many students do not continue the study of Latin after the first year in college. The ample provision for these may serve also to sharpen the appetite of others who later are to make a more thorough study of some of the authors here included. The aim, therefore, has been to make a selection representative of the best Latin poetry of all periods, and full enough to enable the instructor to draw at discretion from the supply contained in a single volume. In matters of orthography and textual criticism the effort has been make not to sacrifice scholarship to the clearness and simplicity that are essential in a book of this nature. The editors plan to publish later brief explanatory notes." 134 pages. *NOTE: Also have the aforementioned "A Selection of Latin Verse Notes" book in online inventory. FRB6.

Add to basketHardcover. Condition: Very Good. 1. Edited by Latin instructors at Williams College. Green cloth boards with gold gilt lettering on spine. Some rubbing at top and bottom of spine and some light wear at hinges. Poetry is in Latin; not translated. Signature by book owner, Eunice Burr Stebbins, on front, free endpaper. Handwritten…Latin transcriptions, seemingly by Stebbins, on first and second of three end flyleaves. Enclosed folded, typewritten letter from editor Monroe N. Wetmore to Eunice Stebbins. Eunice Burr Stebbins Couch (1893-1992) was an archeologist and scholar. In 1979, she donated her collection of ancient coins and other objects to Brown University where they are still housed in the Joukowsky Institute for Archeology and the Ancient World. Tucked into the book is a folded, typewritten letter, dated November 25, 1915, from editor Monroe N. Wetmore to Eunice Burr Stebbins, signed ?Uncle Mo.? Letter opens warmly as Wetmore writes about family Thanksgiving plans and extends an open invitation for Stebbins to visit. The second half of the letter seems to address her questions about the book. For example, Wetmore writes: ?The ?In re [sic] the Latin hymn. It is one of the loveliest of all the hymns. That?s why we included it in our edition. It does seem a pity to suggest that so awful a person as Innocent III could have written it, and sentimental reasons would lead us to assign it to Robert II.?The book and letter together offer a window into Wetmore?s scholarship on Latin verse, his editorial technique, and his family life. It also links Stebbins Couch to him in her early years of studying the classics.
