Add to basketHardcover. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. Stringer, George Alfred & Eliza C. Walker Stringer. The King and the Cross: A Tale of Old and New France. Boston: Eastern Publishing Company, 1901. First Edition. Signed and inscribed by George Alfred Stringer on the front free endpaper: 'With the author's best wishes and…very kind regards. Buffalo, June 10th, 1904.' Original red cloth, decoratively stamped in black and gilt with crowns and fleurs-de-lis. First edition of this historical novel set in Old and New France, co-authored by George Alfred Stringer and Eliza C. Walker Stringer. The title page and copyright page both confirm 1901 publication, with no later printing indications. The decorative Art Nouveau-style binding features bold gilt titling and symbolic heraldic devices, strongly evocative of French royal iconography. The 1904 Buffalo inscription places the author in the midst of his early American literary career. Condition: Very Good. Cloth remains bright with strong gilt; moderate rubbing to extremities and light fraying at spine ends; slight surface wear to upper front board. Interior clean overall with moderate age toning; inscription page lightly browned; no significant foxing or markings beyond inscription. Binding firm. An appealing signed early work from George Alfred Stringer, whose later career spanned journalism, screenwriting, and popular fiction, making signed copies of his earliest publications comparatively scarce. George Alfred Stringer (1874-1953) was a Canadian-born novelist, poet, journalist, and later screenwriter who worked in both American publishing and early Hollywood cinema. Before achieving broader popularity in adventure and mystery fiction, Stringer wrote historical and literary works such as The King and the Cross. His career eventually extended into film writing during the silent era, making his early signed literary works increasingly collectible for those interested in crossover literary and cinematic history.
