A static flux chamber method was used to determine the emission rates of methane, carbon dioxide, and nitrous oxide gases from eight septic tanks and two soil dispersal systems. A technique developed for the measurement of gas flow and concentration at clean-out ports was used to determine the mass flow of gases moving through the household drainage and vent system. There was general agreement in the methane emission rates for the flux chamber and vent system methods. Several sources of variability in the emission rates were also identified. The septic tank was the primary source of methane, whereas the soil dispersal system was the principal source of carbon dioxide and nitrous oxide emissions. Methane concentrations from the soil dispersal system were found to be near ambient concentrations, similarly negligible amounts of nitrous oxide were found in the septic tank. All emissions originating in the soil dispersal system were discharged through the building vent as a result of natural, wind-induced flow. The gaseous emission rate data were determined to be geometrically distributed. The geometric mean and standard deviation (sg) of the total atmospheric emission rates for methane, carbon dioxide, and nitrous oxide based on samples from the vent system were estimated to be 10.7 (sg = 1.65), 335 (sg = 2.13), and 0.20 (sg = 3.62) g/capita.d, respectively. The corresponding total anthropogenic CO2 equivalence (CO2e) of the GHG emissions to the atmosphere, is about 0.1 tonne CO2e/capita.yr.…

L'idea di un corso interdisciplinare di 'Simbolica dello spazio' nasce da una concreta collaborazione sul campo, all'interno di un Dipartimento universitario come il nostro, che vede affiancate discipline geografico politiche a materie come la filosofia politica, la psicologia sociale, la sociologia e la criminologia. Si tratta di un confronto che all'interno di questa struttura dura da qualche anno e che, pur lasciando alle singole discipline il loro spazio istituzionale, ha effettivamente promosso il dibattito tra queste sulle aree cognitive di contatto. Ciò è avvenuto, inizialmente per un moto spontaneo nella vita di dipartimento, ma in una seconda fase il dialogo è diventato fertile, aprendo anche ad uno scambio sempre più intenso con studiosi del settore e coinvolgendo anche gli studenti e qualche tesista, che si è avventurato con successo nell'impervia tematica filosofico-politica della simbolica dello spazio. Così voglio ringraziare il Direttore, prof. Nicola Petruzzellis ci ha dato alcune delle opere più vive ed appassionate, come Critica dell'inautentico e Il metro della libertà, proprio nei tempi più difficili, che del resto non si può mai dire che siano finiti, attraversati dall'Università e dalla politica italiana, quando pareva, specie tra il 1968 e il 1976, che potessero avere partita vinta quei terribles simplificateurs della vita sociale di cui un secolo fa, e con accento profetico, parlava Jacob Burckhardt. Quando non già solo i rapporti tradizionali, che la ragione è sempre pronta a discutere e anche, se necessario, a mutare profondamente, tra maestro e discepoli, padri e figli, vecchi e giovani, sembravano venir sovvertiti in maniera assurda, populistica e scervellata, ma purtroppo i Valori stessi della vita, il Bene e il Bello, il Vero e l'Utile vennero sottoposti alla più brutale delle negazioni, alla più sfacciata delle irrisioni, e soprattutto alla più aberrante delle confusioni, Petruzzellis fu tra gli happy few, non dimentichiamolo, che non perdettero la testa, che non si piegarono né al turbine della tempesta né alle ventate maliziose dell'opportunismo accademico e seppero coraggiosamente pagare di persona. Naturalmente anche a lui è poi toccato il prevedibile destino di tutti i saggi, quello cioè, una volta passato il peggio, di venire immediatamente dimenticati e soprattutto superati nella corsa o rincorsa del favore dei potenti da quella numerosa schiera di nostri concittadini, anche illustri, che è sempre pronta a difenderci dai pericoli quando questi sono sicuramente passati.
