Book is clean and bright with unmarked text, free of stamps, firmly bound. Straight uncreased spine. -- "Sheila Fitzpatrick's numerous studies of the first three decades of Soviet history have fundamentally influenced the manner in which historians comprehend the Soviet Union today. This volume provides a valuable perspective on the current state of the field as reflected in multiple aspects of her work, including the nature and evolution of her interpretation of Soviet history; the impact of her scholarship on countless students; and the interaction of personality and individual experiences. Bringing together outstanding essays on such diverse aspects of the Stalin era as the Soviet monopoly on information and communication, violence in the Gulag, and gender relations after World War II, this volume both highlights Fitzpatrick's legacy and introduces readers to exciting new work in the field." -- Contents: Preface; 1 Writing Russia: The Work of Sheila Fitzpatrick / Ronald Grigor Suny; 2 Sheila Fitzpatrick: An Interpretive Essay / Julie Hessler; 3 The Two Faces of Tatiana Matveevna / Yuri Slezkine; 4 Military Occupation and Social Unrest: Daily Life in Russian Poland at the Start of World War I / Joshua Sanborn; 5 Seeing Like a Soviet State: Settlement of Nomadic Kazakhs, 1928-1934 / Matthew J. Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. 1st Edition. Hardcover, xviii + 346 pages, NOT ex-library. Book is clean and bright throughout with unmarked text, free of inscriptions and stamps, firmly bound. Gentle handling wear only. Issued without a dust jacket. -- A biographical memoir that presents the extraordinary life of Jacques Rossi (1909-2004), a former Soviet secret agent who spent nearly 20 years in the Gulag. Written as a "conversation between friends" with French writer Michèle Sarde, it weaves Rossi's personal reflections with historical analysis to document his journey from a committed communist to a disillusioned witness of Stalinist repression. The book is structured into three chronological parts - "Before," "During," and "After" - covering Rossi's entire century-spanning life. Political Disillusionment: It traces Rossi's path from joining the Communist Party at age 17 and serving as a Comintern secret agent to his arrest during Stalin's Great Purges in 1937. The Gulag Experience: Rossi provides detailed, "anthropological" accounts of daily life in the camps near Norilsk, describing the brutal cold (reaching -57 degrees Celsius), starvation rations, and the complex social hierarchy between "politicals" and hardened criminals. He attributes his survival to a combination of physical resilience, intellectual curiosity, and luck. Legacy as a Witness: After his eventual release in 1956 and return to France in 1985, Rossi dedicated his life to documenting the Gulag, most notably by compiling The Gulag Handbook, a monumental encyclopaedia of camp terminology and culture. The English edition from the University of Toronto Press includes an introduction by historian Golfo Alexopoulos, providing critical context on the Soviet carceral state and Rossi's contributions to our understanding of it. Some scholars have compared Rossi's detailed observations and dry, ironic tone to those of Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn and Varlam Shalamov. -- "Jacques Rossi is one of Stalin's most well-known victims. Author of The Gulag Handbook, a fascinating encyclopedia of the Soviet forced labour camps, Rossi spent twenty years in interrogation, prison, and Gulag detention. Born to a prominent Polish father and French mother, the young Jacques became attracted to communism as a blueprint for radical social reform. He spent years in the communist underground in interwar Europe, agitating for the revolution, but he was arrested during Stalin's Great Purges in 1937. This book represents a conversation between Jacques Rossi and Michèle Sarde which weaves together personal reflections and historical analysis. Rossi's remarkable life (1909-2004) spanned the twentieth century and sheds important light on the tumultuous history of Europe - the appeal of communism in the interwar period and beyond, the mentality of party members, the effects of mass repression, everyday life in Stalin's Gulag, and the problem of rights for former prisoners during the Khrushchev era. As he abandoned his internationalist communist beliefs, Rossi increasingly identified as French, embracing the name his fellow prisoners gave him in the Gulag, "Jacques the Frenchman." Rossi's reflections on his own political beliefs, his frustrations with those who could not accept the truth of his brutal experiences in the Soviet Union, and his life as a witness to one of the twentieth century's worst crimes offer a fascinating history of Stalinism and its legacies.".…
