Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book challenges the claim that traveling Methodist preachers of the early American church were valid bishops and had true ecclesiastical authority. The author delves into historical documents, including letters, journals, and conference minutes, to present a detailed account of the establishment of the Methodist Episcopal Church in the United States. By examining the intentions of John Wesley, the author argues that the preachers acted without his blessing when they assumed episcopal titles and transitioned the church to an episcopal form of government. This book sheds light on the complex power dynamics and doctrinal disputes that shaped the early Methodist movement, offering valuable insights for scholars and individuals interested in the history of American religion and ecclesiastical governance. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.…

Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book, first published in 1850, explores the history of the Methodist Episcopal Church and its controversial division into two factions â" the Methodist Episcopal Church, North, and the Methodist Episcopal Church, South â" following the General Conference of 1844. The text is derived from a series of articles that appeared in an 1840s Boston newspaper and were intended to inform readers about the origins and present organization of the Methodist Episcopal Church. The author, Rev. Alexander McAine, argues that the General Conference's resolution requiring Bishop James Osgood Andrew to refrain from exercising the duties of his office â" due to his involvement with slavery â" was not authorized by the denomination's constitution or its Book of Discipline. Providing a lengthy historical context to the division within the Methodist Episcopal Church, the author examines the heated debates that took place during the General Conference, the significance of the bishops, and the political influence of the denomination throughout the United States. The book offers a valuable analysis of the historical and theological underpinnings of the Methodist Episcopal Church, shedding light on the complex issues that have shaped its history.
