Biography of this British army officer, prime minister and statesman -- one of the leading figures of the late 18th and early 19th century in Britain. With large engraved folding map at back, two folding plates, frontispieces in each volume, portraits and illustrations -- 16 altogether. Set of two hardcovers, bound in half leather and marbled boards. Bright gilt titles and decorations to spines. Very good condition - firmly bound, leather in good condition, boards rubbed. Some foxing to portraits. Large map has a small hole at center (visible in images) where the backing shows through. The Dedication to former owner E. L. Berthon at top of title page of Vol 1, likely from his mother E. G. (Elizabeth Green) Berthon. E. L. Berthon (1813-1899) was an English inventor and clergyman. He invented a collapsible boat which was used in notable Arctic and African explorations. A very nice set.
