Soft cover. Condition: Very Good. Original publisher's beige paper pamphlet. Text printed in black ink. No date, circa 1842. 5 3/4" x 9." Thirty-two pages, complete. Pages are clean and intact overall but have a small colored pencil mark on front, splitting along spine, light age toning, edge wear, and creased corners in lower-right of fore-edge. A Very Good copy. This pamphlet contains printed correspondence between Daniel Webster (1782-1852), an American lawyer and politician, and Lord Ashburton (also known as Alexander Baring; 1774-1848), a British politician, about three significant subjects in United States and British history. Each subject is treated separately beginning with "McLeod's Case" and followed by the "Creole Case" and by the "Subject of Impressment." Also factoring into at least the first two subjects is the Webster-Ashburton Treaty of 1842 which addressed them at least in part. "McLeod's Case" is about the trial of Alexander McLeod (1796-1871), a Scottish-Canadian sheriff who was arrested and charged with the murder of Amos Durfee, an African-American sailor and watchmaker who was fatally shot in the infamous Caroline affair (1837-1842). McLeod was eventually acquitted by a jury because he apparently had an alibi showing he had not been near Durfee when the murder happened. The Caroline was a steamboat that had been used by Canadian rebels led by William Lyon McKenzie (1795-1861), a Scottish Canadian, to ferry weapons and supplies between Navy Island on the Canadian side of the Niagara River and Schlosser, New York. The rebels were dissatisfied with British administration in Canada. British and Canadian forces eventually captured the Caroline at Schlosser's Landing in the U.S. and set it on fire and over Niagara Falls. During the confrontation between the Anglo-Canadian forces and McKenzie's crew aboard the Caroline (who later fled the ship), shots were exchanged and Durfee was killed. The Caroline affair led to the establishment of international law regarding territorial inviolability that said a country could only trespass into another country for unavoidable preemptive self-defense purposes. "The Creole Case" is about the Creole mutiny (1841), widely considered the most successful slave revolt in U.S. history. One of the slaves, Madison Washington, led a revolt aboard the slave ship Creole and forced a plantation overseer, William Merritt, to redirect the ship (originally headed for New Orleans) to Nassau in the British-controlled Bahamas. Since Britain had outlawed the slave trade in 1807 and slavery in 1833, it ruled that all of the slaves on board the Creole, which had landed at Nassau, were now free. Webster ruled against the slaves in this case (claiming they were U.S. "property"), but British law was upheld and the majority of the slaves (128 in total) were freed. "Subject of Impressment" addresses the issue of sailor impressment involving the U.S. and Britain. Notably, the Webster-Ashburton Treaty resolved some of the territorial conflicts between the U.S. and Britain and included a mutual agreement that there should be an end to the slave trade.

Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book examines the evolution of banking practices in England, with a particular focus on the impact of the Bank Charter Act of 1844. The author, a seasoned financial expert and former politician, argues that the Act's rigid restrictions on the issuance of banknotes have exacerbated economic downturns, such as the one experienced in 1825 and the one the country is currently facing. The author argues that the Act's insistence on limiting the issuance of banknotes to a fixed amount of gold or silver reserves has led to a contraction of credit and a reduction in lending, which has in turn stifled economic activity. The author proposes a more flexible approach to monetary policy, one that takes into account the specific circumstances of each economic downturn and allows for a more nuanced response from the Bank of England. By providing a detailed historical analysis and a compelling argument for reform, this book offers valuable insights into the complex relationship between banking practices and economic stability. Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book presents an analysis of early 19th-century policies and debates surrounding the neutral trade of America with European colonies against the backdrop of war. The author examines the historical and legal context of these conflicts, with a specific focus on the Orders in Council passed by the British government that sparked controversy. The book explores the complex motives and interests of the different parties involved, including the British, Americans, and French, and assesses the impact of these policies on the broader course of the war. The author argues that the British government's attempts to enforce the rule of the war of 1756 ultimately proved to be ill-conceived and counterproductive, and that they failed to take into account the changing dynamics of global trade and the growing importance of neutral powers. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format.
