Bellissima copia di grande freschezza e splendidamente legata in marocchino biondo coevo, piatti riccamente ornati in oro con al centro uno stemma nobiliare dipinto ad olio non identificato, ma probabilmente riconducibile ad una famiglia di zona laziale, dorso a cinque nervetti con impressioni in oro, tagli dorati (minimi fori di tarlo al dorso). With extra engraved full-page title, oval cartouche on both titles, 14 full-page engravings by Arnold v. Westerhout, Jacob Freij and others, after Josef Passarus, 10 near half-page engraved end-pieces (2 signed by J. Freij, 1 by M. Schedl), wood-engraved historiate and foliate capital initials in both red and black. Contemporary red morocco with richly ornate gilt floral designs on covers and spine, edges gilt; spine end and corners repaired. An attractive rococo missal with elaborate contemporary gilt floral binding. The work bears a short dedicatory preface by the publishers and reference to the Papal Bull of Pius V. The illustrations depict biblical stories and allegorical representations of the Virgin s life, the extra title is a fine interpretation of God appearing to Adam and Eve in the garden with the serpent, the engraver Westerhout has dedicated the work to Ferdinand, Prince of the Etruscans. The end-pieces generally show putti with allegorical emblems, one or two are metaphors of self-sacrifice (the pelican with her young). Binding worn, else Well preserved. Signed by Author(s).

The title (translated), perhaps best describes this work: Office of the Holy Week: with vulgar rubrics, subject of psalms, explanation of ceremonies and mysteries, with sacred observations and devote refl…ections; Work of the Abbot Alessandro Mazzinelli; Sagrista of the cathedral of Montesstascone, and presetto of the studies of the seminary of that city. In Italian: Uffizio della settimana santa : colle rubriche volgari, argomento de' salmi, spiegazione delle cerimonie e misterj, con osservazioni sacre e riflessioni divote; Opera dell' Abate Alessandro Mazzinelli,Sagrista della cattedrale di Montesstascone, e presetto degli study del Seminario di detta Citta. Physical Attributes - Measures approx. 15 x 9.5 x 3.5 cm, 8vo. Crushed calf binding, with panelled boards; central panel mottled, outer panel with gilt corner florets and sprays of leaves, boards framed with a leafy gilt roll. Board edges rolled in gilt. Spine with four raised bands; compartments with a central gilt floret and corner leaves. Marbled endpapers. Two silk ribbons (green). Gauffered edges. One printer's mark and three full-page illustrations. 573 pages. Condition - See pictures. Some wear to edges and corners of binding. Treatment of central panel is mottled. Spine with some worming, especially at top (see picture). Top edge with silk ribbons still connected and gilt still showing (free from heavy dust; indicating it's been kept in an enclosed bookcase). Worm track on pastedown and flyleaf. Ex libris plate on pastedown. Foxing to endpapers which has lightly transferred to title page and last leaf verso; also, some bookseller numbers on endpapers. Occasional thumb, fox spot, toning, and dog-eared page. Small mark on 75 and 77. 1 cm fox spot in bottom margin of 80-100. Misc. (illustrator).
