Santa Maria Novella è la prima, in senso cronologico, delle grandi basiliche fiorentine. Il nome Novella le viene dall'aver sostituito sulla piazza un oratorio del IX secolo, già ingrandito nel 1094, chiamato Santa Maria delle Vigne. Nel 1221 questa chiesa e l'area circostante vengono assegnati ai frati domenicani, che subito iniziano la trasformazione. La costruzione di quella che sarà la sontuosa sede del potente Ordine domenicano inizia nel 1246 ad opera di due monaci architetti, frà Sisto Fiorentino e frà Ristoro da Campi, e viene conclusa nel 1360 sotto la direzione di frà Iacopo Talenti, autore anche del Cappellone degli Spagnoli (1350-55), del Refettorio del convento (1353) e del grande campanile cuspidato in stile romanico-gotico (1330). La ricca facciata a intarsi di marmo bianco e nero è un capolavoro: iniziata nel 1300, sarà poi completata nel 1470 da Leon Battista Alberti. L'interno della Basilica ospita una serie di opere che portano la firma di Giotto, Andrea Orcagna, Brunelleschi, Ghiberti, Benedetto da Maiano, Masaccio, Domenico Ghirlandaio e Filippino Lippi.
