Sendak's artwork, produced shortly after Where the Wild Things Are (1963), carries his signature blend of whimsy and quiet intimacy, making this an appealing crossover title for collectors of children's literature, illustration, and music. This is an ex-library copy from J.C. Parks Primary School (Indian Head, Maryland), but notably well-preserved. The book remains structurally sound with clean, bright interior pages (Near Fine), free of writing or markings beyond expected library indicators. Light abrasion observed on interior front board and flyleaf. The dust jacket is present and protected, with typical library labels and light wear; the book retains its original endpapers with pocket and circulation cards intact - offering an appealing snapshot of mid-20th-century school library use. A desirable early Sendak-illustrated work with strong visual appeal and increasingly collected in any complete Sendak run, particularly in jacketed hardcover. Maurice Sendak (1928-2012) was one of the most influential American illustrators of the 20th century, best known for Where the Wild Things Are and recipient of the 1964 Caldecott Medal. Created in collaboration with the distinguished American composer Alec Wilder and editor William Engvick, the volume presents a selection of traditional and original lullabies brought vividly to life through Sendak's imaginative illustrations. The book received a Caldecott Honor and remains one of the artist's most celebrated achievements outside the Little Bear and Where the Wild Things Are series. While signed copies of Sendak's books are desirable, examples containing original drawings are particularly sought after. Here the artist has added a charming sketch of a goat in a tall hat, rendered with the effortless economy of line that characterizes his finest doodles and presentation drawings.
